AI Inventory
About the AI Inventory
Maryland state legislation (SB 818) requires the Department of Information Technology (DoIT) to maintain an inventory of AI use cases across state agencies, from using AI for productivity tasks like automated note-taking to bespoke AI systems that agencies maintain in-house.
This AI inventory confirms our commitment to transparency, security, and responsible innovation. The inventory's system for cataloging AI tools is directly integrated into the State's existing technology governance frameworks:
- Annual Software Inventory: AI systems will be identified and reviewed as part of an annual software inventory
- Software Intake Process: All new procurement or development of AI-enabled products must go through DoIT's standard intake process. This helps DoIT track AI use across state government, and include use cases in our inventory.
This consolidated approach ensures that all AI systems used by the State are properly documented, assessed for risk, and aligned with Maryland's strategic goals.
